Giovanni Francesco Abela

Giovanni Francesco Abela , Maltese : Ġan Franġisk Abela; (* 1582 in La Valletta ; † May 4, 1655 ibid) was a Maltese nobleman and historian.

He was Vice Chancellor of the Order of Malta and is the author of an important work on Malta entitled Della Descrittione di Malta isola nel Mare Siciliano: con le sue antichità, ed altre notizie (description of the island of Malta in the Sicilian Sea, with its antiquities and other notes) . The work also includes a section on the Maltese language . From 1640, when he was retired, he set up a public archive on the upper floor of the oratory of St. John's Church .

Giovanni Antonio Ciantar (1696–1778) wrote a supplement to this: Malta Illustrata .
