Girinatha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pura Girinatha , the Hindu temple in East Timor, is dedicated to Girinatha.

Girinatha or Giri Natha ("Giri" German  mountain , "Nath" German  Lord, God ) is a Hindu deity. He is the Lord of the Mountains and can be seen as the epithet of the deity Shiva or as the incarnation of Mount Sumeru .

King Hayam Wuruk (* 1334; † 1389, also Rajasanagara ) saw himself as the incarnation of Girinatha, who enjoyed great popularity in the region. He was ruler of the kingdom of Majapahit , the last Hindu empire in the Malay Archipelago from 13th to 16th centuries Century dominated large areas around Java . Hayam Wuruk relied on signs such as a volcanic eruption at the time of his birth to prove his divinity. Girinatha's main temple was the Penataran (also Panataran) in East Java , where the mythical origin of the ruling dynasty of Majapahit lay. During his tenure, Hayam Wuruk made several pilgrimages to the temple, which was then still called Palah , and built numerous buildings here.

Before Hayam Wuruk, Ken Angrok (ruler of Tumapel and founder of the Singhasari empire around 1222) called himself the incarnation of Girinatha.

Today there are still temples of Girinatha on Java, Sulawesi and Bali . The only Hindu temple in East Timor , the Pura Girinatha, is also dedicated to Girnatha.
