Giske (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Giske family was an old Norwegian noble family, founded by Torberg Arnesson from the even older family of Arnmødling and Ragnhild, the daughter of Erling Skjalgsson on Sola , the powerful enemy of Olav the Saint . Torberg himself stuck to Olav, followed him into exile and took part at his side in the battle of Stiklestad , where he was wounded.

Þóra, one of her daughters, married King Harald Hardråde in 1047 and became the ancestor of the subsequent royal family. The son Øysteinn Orre died in 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge , another son, Ogmund auf Giske, was the father of Skofte Ogmundsson , the first Norwegian crusader. He died in Rome in 1103. His son Pål Skofteson took up residence on Giske, but his daughter Tora married into the noble family of Rein. Pål's son Nikolas Pålsson Kuvung († 1217) was a follower of King Magnus Erlingsson and played a major role in the civil war between Birkebeinern and King Magnus. Nikolas' son, Pål Flida, was a supporter of Duke Skule Bårdsson , while his son Pétur was on the side of King Håkon . But he was distrusted that he was really on Skuli's side. With his son Nikolas, the Giske family died out in the male line in 1265. His property passed into the younger Bjarkøy family through the marriage of his daughter Margrete Nikolasdatter with Bjarne Erlingsson.
