Giulio Casati

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giulio Casati (born December 9, 1942 ) is an Italian theoretical physicist who deals with quantum chaos . He is Professor at the Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems at the University of Insubria in Como .

Casati studied physics at the University of Milan with a degree in 1968 and was a post-doctoral student at the Euratom Research Center in Ispra and in 1971/72 at the Georgia Institute of Technology . In 1973 he became an assistant professor at the University of Milan and in 1987 he was given a full professorship in theoretical physics. From 1993 to 1998 he was Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Milan. From 1993 to 1998 he was director of the Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems in Como and in 1998 he moved to the University of Insubria as a professor of theoretical physics. Since 2005 he has also been a professor at the National University of Singapore .

He examined quantum chaos, among other things, in the simple kicked rotator model he introduced with Chirikov, Ford and Izrailev in 1979 (Lecture Notes in Physics 93) and in the hydrogen atom in external fields.

Since 1980 he has also been the scientific coordinator of the Alessandro Volta Center in Como.

In 2008 he received the Premio Enrico Fermi . Since 1989 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea .
