The University of Insubria ( Italian : Università degli Studi dell'Insubria ) is a state university with around 9,000 students and locations in the Lombard cities of Varese and Como .
The University of Insubria goes back to a medical faculty at the University of Pavia and was founded on July 14, 1998 . Its name is derived from the historical region of Insubria , which today roughly comprises the province of Como , the province of Varese and the Swiss canton of Ticino . The university is divided into five faculties and cooperates closely with the University of Milan and the University of Pavia.
