Emergence

Cash said a San Quentin inmate asked him to take a note for his wife should he ever drive through his hometown. According to Cash, this conversation was the inspiration for the play, which is about a terminally ill convict who is released after ten years in prison. He is on his way from San Francisco to Louisiana to see his wife and child one last time before he dies. He collapses on the rails of the train, where he is picked up by a stranger. The convict asks the man to bring his love and a little money to his wife. The man agrees.

Cash recorded the song on Sun in the usual fashion; that is, he himself played the rhythm guitar, Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant could be heard on lead guitar and bass, respectively. This track was the last that Sam Phillips was responsible for producing. Then he gave this work to Jack Clement . The sound of the Sun recording is very rough and harsh. The rhythm guitar Cashs and Grant's Bass sound almost scratchy and the voice has been post-processed with reverb . An alternative take with choirs in the background was discarded by Sun Records.

Releases of the song

Cash recorded the song several times over the course of his career, the Sun Records version was not only on the 1960 album Johnny Cash sings Hank Williams (although the song was not by Hank Williams ) on All Aboard the Blue Train from 1962 released.

Cash reissued the song for the following albums:

Bruce Springsteen performed the song solo and acoustically on the television show An All Star Tribute to Johnny Cash , recorded and broadcast in April 1999 . Springsteen called the song one of his favorite Cash songs.
