Transparent prototype is a project that deals with tracking & tracing of test vehicles and prototype parts in the automotive industry using radio frequency identification (RFID) .

Objective of the project

The aim of the “Transparent Prototype” project is the electronic identification and tracking of prototype parts and the automated documentation of the construction status of test vehicles as part of vehicle development. During the development phase, test vehicles are subject to a continuous process of change. These changes are still mostly documented manually or with the help of barcodes or data matrix codes . The "Transparent Prototype" provides for the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) : Prototype parts are marked with RFID transponders and can be identified and documented automatically by radio, without direct visual contact and thus also when installed. Among other things, RFID gates are used for this purpose (see figure). In addition to the use of AutoID, the increased use of electronic data exchange between suppliers and automobile manufacturers is addressed. Due to the use of new technologies and the digitization of the value chain, the transparent prototype is also one of the application examples of the Industry 4.0 initiative .

Methodical approach

The cross- company working group "Transparent Prototype" was founded in 2012 under the umbrella of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) . The result of this coordination process is the industrial recommendation VDA 5509 of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) . The industry recommendation VDA 5509 specifies for the first time both the technical and procedural implementation of the use of RFID as part of the vehicle development process. The procedure is described in several practice-oriented and scientific articles.

Spread in the automotive industry

The RFID-based tracking of test vehicles and prototype parts according to VDA 5509 has been implemented in practice on a large scale since 2013/2014. Well-known players are the Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi brands of Volkswagen AG . In 2018, the Technical Development Department of the VW brand will be supplied with RFID-tagged components from around 400 suppliers, and the entire VW Group will receive RFID components from over 500 suppliers. The project is currently one of the most important RFID initiatives within the automotive industry and is one of the drivers for cross-company RFID standardization in the context of Industry 4.0 .
