Glanzer (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The von Glanzer family was an Austrian knight dynasty based at Odernheim Castle in Carinthia .

coat of arms

In the course of history the family carried several coats of arms. Rainald von Glanzer had a coat of arms with a white stag on a blue background. At Odernheim Castle, the coat of arms is quartered, on the one hand it shows the white deer on a blue background, on the other hand it shows a black bear on a yellow background. The convicted traitor Rudolf von Glanzer wore a red coat of arms with a white billy goat.

history

The founders of the family were Karl von (der) Glan, who is said to have received the knighthood in 1162. The first Glanzer mentioned in a document was Rainald von Glanzer, who lived from 1173 to 1206. Whether this is really the son of Karl von Glan is still unclear. In the High and Late Middle Ages the Glanzer were one of the most influential knight families in Carinthia, but after the end of the Middle Ages they lost more and more influence and sank into insignificance. In 1804 Rudolf von Glanzer betrayed the Austrian emperor and supported Napoleon, but he was caught and in 1806 charged with high treason and convicted. His property fell to the empire and the family forfeited the noble privileges.

progeny

Theoretically, the gender still exists in the male line, but they are not allowed to have a "from" in their name. They also no longer have the right to their old possessions, such as Odernheim Castle. Descendants of the family live in Styria and Carinthia and are called Glanzer, Pichler, Degold or Griesenauer.
