The gloss renette or gloss reinette is an apple variety bred in the 19th century . It takes its name from the shiny skin and was one of the most popular table apples around the turn of the century.

It is described as no. 334 on page 376 in Theodor Engelbrecht's standard work, "Illustrated Handbuch der Obstkunde" (1889). Some pomologists assigned them to the kantäpfeln , others see a relationship to the Calville varieties.
