Glass Bowl (game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Glass Bowl was an annual game in US college football . It was held at the Glass Bowl by the University of Toledo between 1946 and 1949 .

Toledo was a manufacturing center for glass objects in the 1940s. Wayne Kohn, a shipyard worker in a Toledo glass company, recommended that city leaders introduce a "Glass Bowl" to increase the prestige of the city and the industry. The University of Toledo announced the introduction of a new bowl game at a press conference in New York City on October 25, 1946.

The University of Toledo operated the Glass Bowl games as part of their regular schedule. The University of Toledo football team, the Toledo Rockets , went to the Glass Bowl with positive results in all four seasons. Toledo won the first three competitions, but their perfect Glass Bowl record was broken by the University of Cincinnati in game four.

In 1950, the University of Toledo Sports Department decided to suspend the Glass Bowl for one season. At the time of the decision, Toledo had only won two of the first six games. In 1951 the Glass Bowl was completely closed because no team had agreed to take part.
