In the railway sector, the track yoke is the name for a preassembled unit of mostly two rails of equal length on which the sleepers are preassembled. The yoke length is max. 25 meters. The purpose is the quick installation or removal of track sections or complete switches (in several parts). Today, after the yoke has been installed, the rails are exchanged for long rails , which are thermit - or electro - welded to form an endless rail at their ends, on the rail joint . In earlier times the rails were connected with straps. These were screwed to the rail web. When expanding the yoke, the rails are cut to length with a cut-off saw to the possible loading capacity (carriage length / crane).
