Glenburgie is a whiskey distillery in Forres, Moray , Scotland , UK .

history

Glenburgie was founded in 1810 as a Kinflat Distillery by Willam Paul. Production of the distillery officially began in 1829. In 1870, Kinflat was closed. It reopened in 1878 under the name Glenburgie-Glenlivet . Charles Hay is the license holder. In 1884 the distillery was sold to Alexander Fraser & Co. When they went bankrupt in 1925, Donald Mustad took over the management of Glenburgie. In 1927 it was bought by James & George Stodart Ltd. acquired. Production was stopped at this point. In 1930 Hiram Walker bought 60% of the shares - and in October 1936 the remaining 40%. In 1958 the distillery was renovated. Two Lomond stills that were previously in use at Inverleven were installed and the single malt produced from them was sold under the name Glencraig . The floor malt house was closed. In 1981 the Lomond stills were replaced by conventional stills. In 1987, Hiram Walker was taken over by Allied Lyons. From 2004 to June 2005, Glenburgie was completely renovated for £ 4.3 million. Since then, the distillery has been state-of-the-art when it comes to technology and the entire manufacturing process can be carried out by one person with the simple push of a button. In 2006 the production capacity was increased by 50% with the construction of another pair of stills. In 2005, Glenburgie was taken over by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard) as part of the takeover of Allied Domecq.

production

The water at the Speyside distillery comes from local springs near the distillery. The malt comes from other malt houses (Robert Kilgour in Kirkaldy). The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (4.7 t) of steel and thirteen fermenting vessels ( wash backs ) (per 23,500 l). It is distilled in three coarse stills ( wash stills ) (11,750 l each) and three spirit stills (15,000 l each), which are heated by steam.

Bottlings

Glenburgie is primarily a component of the well-known Ballantine’s and Teacher’s blends . The original bottling was a 15-year-old single malt in the Allied Special Distillery Bottlings series in 2002 .

With a bit of luck you can occasionally find a Glencraig from independent bottlers , which was produced here until 1981. For example, Signatory launched a 28-year-old Glencraig in 2003 and Duncan Taylor launched a 30-year-old in 2004.
