Detersion

The Deter Sion refers to the abrasive action of a glacier , which extends over a rock moved away body. The term glacier cut is also used as a synonym, the latter term also denoting the result of the deterrence.

Emergence

The ground is eroded by the sliding of the moving ice , although the ice is much softer than the rock. The grinding or smoothing effect unfolds in the pending due to the debris carried along ( moraine ). The typical glacier scrapes ( scratches ) are created. The mutual grinding of stones of the ground moraine and the rock creates glacier powder, which is transported away as suspended cargo with the meltwater. The glacial lakes get their characteristic greenish-white color from the so-called glacier milk . Detersion mainly acts on the windward side facing the ice movement on elevations of the subsoil.

Exposed glacier cuts are very common in newly glaciated areas around the world. Beautiful examples can be seen east of the village of Fischbach near Flintsbach am Inn , in the Pflerschtal in South Tyrol and in St. Margareten in the Rosental .
