Global Tools

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Global Tools is an Italian initiative of designers and architects who founded a social network under this name in 1973 . Their aim is to jointly promote alternative design and art ideas.

On January 12, 1973, the group was formed in the editorial office of Casabella magazine . In addition to Archizoom , Gruppe 9999 and Superstudio , the founding members were also individual designers such as Ettore Sottsass and Gaetano Pesce . In addition, the magazines Casabella and Rassegna joined. They should report regularly on the development and results of Global Tools. The aim of the merger was to build a network of independent, radical design laboratories around Florence . Within these left-leaning laboratories, the design process should be understood as a culture-creating moment in order to free it from the restrictive possibilities of industrial design. Similar to the Arts & Crafts Movement, Global Tools pursued the recovery of aesthetic and emotional values. The use of natural materials should also be encouraged. Even if Global Tools itself was not a great success, the group served as a forum for ideas of radical design until the 1980s and had an undeniable influence on later groups such as Studio Alchimia or Memphis Design .
