Gaetano Pesce (* 1939 in La Spezia ) is an Italian architect and designer.

Life

Pesce studied architecture at the IUAV from 1958 to 1963. In 1969 Pesce made his debut as a designer with the inflatable chair "Up". Before that he worked as an architect and artist. In 1972 Cassina founded “Bracciodiferro”, the first experimental design company. Pesce runs it. In 1972 the first attempts with synthetic resin led to the "Golgotha ​​Chair", a cloth stiffened with synthetic resin to form the seat. In addition, Pesce taught at internationally renowned universities such as the Institut d'Árchitecture et d'Etudes Urbaines in Strasbourg and the Domus Academy in Milan for two years. In 1980 he moved to New York. Pesce set up studios on Broadway and Houston Street in SoHo. His “Tramonto a New York” sofa system was created, produced by Cassina. 1987 was one of the first to experiment with felt. The result was one of his most successful models, the armchair from the "I Feltri" series (Cassina). In the years that followed, further designs were created with specific references to the new home, including the very multi-legged “Broadway Chair” model, which was realized by the Italian company Bernini. Pesce founded Fish Design in 1994, based in Milan and New York. Vases, bowls, mirrors, wall clocks, but also belts, chains and rings in experimental synthetic resin molds are produced. In 2002 Pesce caused a sensation at the Milan Furniture Fair with his series "Nobody's Perfect". The chairs, sideboards and tables that Zerodisegno produces thematize the individualization of mass production. There are no two identical copies of each model. The 2005 Triennale in Milan presented an extensive retrospective of the work of Gaetano Pesce. The exhibition was shown with great success in the Vitra Design Museum in Weil in the second half of the year.

His works can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
