João Paulo Maio dos Santos (born November 21, 1970 in Vila do Conde ), better known under the name Paulinho Santos , is a former Portuguese football player who played in defensive midfield.

Club career

Santos began his career with local club Rio Ave FC , and moved to FC Porto in 1992 , with whom he won seven league titles and five domestic cups. In Porto he and four other players were the only ones in the history of Portuguese football who won five championship titles in a row (1994-1999). When Porto won the UEFA Cup in 2003 , Santos was only a substitute player. He ended his career after the season.

Santos was an aggressive player. During his career there were often violent arguments with João Vieira Pinto from Benfica Lisbon . As a symbolic gesture, however, both swapped jerseys before Santos' last game against Sporting Clube de Portugal (where Pinto was playing at the time) at the Estádio das Antas in July 2003. Three years later he began a career as a coach, first with the youth team of postage.

Since February 14, 2012 he has been assistant coach at FC Porto.

International career

Paulinho Santos took part in 30 international matches for Portugal and scored two goals (one of them single-handedly in the 1-1 away game against Austria on October 11, 1995). His first game was on January 19, 1994 in a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Spain in Vigo , his last on February 10, 1999 in a 1-0 win against the Netherlands in Rotterdam (also a friendly).

Santos took part in the European Football Championship in 1996 as a defender , at the European Football Championship 2000 he could not participate due to injury.
