The Glocknerman is an annual extreme cycling event and at the same time the world championship in the ultra cycling marathon. Start and finish is in the Styrian capital Graz . The approximately 1,000 km (ultra route) and 888 km (classic route) are completed in one stage and without major breaks. The Glocknerman is one of the oldest extreme cycling events in the world, it can be tackled solo, in a team of 2 or 4. Since 2017 there has also been a third, shorter distance of 450 km - the Glocknerman Sprint.

history

The Glocknerman was made by Walther Wessiak sen. , an extreme cyclist from Graz. In 1997 the Glocknerman was held for the first time as a 3-day trip. The Glocknerman has been held as an ultra marathon since 1999, which has not changed to this day. In 2014 the extreme cyclist Jacob Zurl took over the organization of the event together with his brother Christoph Zurl. In the following year, the Schlossbergman was launched, which has since been part of the Glocknerman as a prologue. From 2016 the Glocknerman will also be an official qualifying race for the Race Across America .

At least once the Glocknerman was started from Schwarzlsee in Unterpremstätten near Graz, most recently (2019) in Graz-Webling from the West Shopping Center.

The event

The participants manage the route with one or more support vehicles. This is used to supply and partially navigate the cyclist. Driving in the slipstream is prohibited. The stopwatch continues to run during pauses.

The Glocknerman usually takes place around the first weekend in June and lasts four days. Since 2015 there has been a prologue, the Schlossbergman, on Wednesdays. The participants ride together with other amateur and professional cyclists from the Karmeliterplatz in Graz to the Schloßberg . The ranking list shows the starting order for the Glocknerman, which then starts on Thursday as part of the Graz City Cycling. The first participants reach the finish on Saturday morning. As part of the closing event with dinner, the award ceremony will take place on Saturday evening.

route

There are three different route variants for the Glocknerman - the ultra, classic and sprint route. Allocation to the Ultra and Classic routes is based on gender and age. The sprint route is open to all participants. Over the years the route has been changed regularly. In the version of the last few years, four sub-areas can be distinguished on the ultra and classic route:

  • From Graz over the Soboth to Winklern .
  • From Winklern, the participants drive through the Lesach Valley and arrive back in Winklern. The Classic participants drive a shorter route.
  • This is followed by the journey over the Großglockner High Alpine Road to the Edelweißspitze , where the Classic drivers turn around again towards Winklern. On the north side, the ultra riders drive down the Großglockner again towards Zell am See and a second time over the Großglockner back to Winklern.
  • After the third time in Winklern, the participants drive back to Graz.

The sprint route ends at the Großglockner and does not lead back to Graz.
