Edelweißspitze

The Edelweißspitze is 2572  m above sea level. A. high summit of the Glockner group , northeast of the Großglockner , in the Hohe Tauern .

General

It forms the highest point of the toll Grossglockner High Alpine Road , which can be reached via the Edelweißstraße as a cul-de-sac from the Dr.-Franz-Rehrl-Haus (Restaurant Fuschertörl), a little below the Fuscher Törl .

history

The summit was originally 2577  m high and was previously called Poneck , Leitenkogel or Bergerkogel . In the west, the Piffkarschneide, a narrow ridge, runs from the summit down towards the Ferleitental. Under this ridge there is a steep wall called the edelweiss wall . The southeast slope of the Edelweißspitze towards the Fuscher Törl, on which the Edelweißstraße was built, was named Edelweißleite in 1935 .

When the Edelweißstrasse was being built, the client, Franz Wallack , came up with a name for the Poneck summit and, based on the two existing Edelweiß names, came up with the current name Edelweißspitze .

Summit development

The observation tower

At the highest point, a stone tower with an oval base was built next to a parking lot, from which you have an excellent all-round view of 37 three-thousand-meter peaks and 19 glacier fields in good weather. There is a "Bikers Point" for motorcyclists in this observation tower. Boards in four languages provide information about the three international Großglockner automobile and motorcycle races in the 1930s.

The Edelweißspitze originally had a height of 2577  m , the difference to today's height was removed when the summit car park was built.

To the northwest below the summit is the Edelweißhütte , a restaurant with accommodation.

There is also a webcam on the Edelweißspitze that sends live images.
