The Karmeliterplatz is a square in the inner city of Graz and was named after the former Carmelite monastery .

The square is located between Sporgasse , Hartigasse and Paulustorgasse. The peacock garden connects to the east. The Karmeliterplatz was laid out by Archduke Charles II from 1578 and was planned as the center of a city expansion. It is a large rectangular complex and has a closed structure from the 17th century on the north and south sides. Until the Carmelite monastery was founded in 1629 by Emperor Ferdinand II , the Karmeliterplatz was called Platz gegen die Burg . From 1938 to 1945 it was renamed Rudolf-Erlbacher-Platz.

At the edge of the square next to the almost square fountain stands the Trinity Column . This was once located in the main square at the entrance to Sackstrasse and had to be relocated due to the expansion of the transport network. In addition to the Karmeliterplatz and the Holy Trinity Column, the former Palais Galler is worth mentioning, which is now the headquarters of the Styrian People's Party . The Pfauengarten, which is directly connected to the Karmeliterplatz, is currently an event area with underground parking. The area is limited by the remains of a city wall. At the entrance to the underground car park in Sauraugasse you can see a corner tower .

Steiermärkisches Landesarchiv
(former Carmelite monastery)
The Styrian State Archives are now housed in the premises of the former Carmelite monastery. The monastery was built according to the plans of Domenico Torres for Archduke Ferdinand from 1628 to 1631. In the course of the Josephine reforms , the monastery was profaned and the tower of the Church of St. Joseph was demolished. After the monastery was closed, the building was used as a garrison hospital until 1918, later as a state gendarmerie command and finally as a state archive. Graz State Archives 2.jpg

( former Palais Galler )
The party headquarters of the Styrian People's Party is located in the premises of the former Palais Galler on the south side of the Karmeliterplatz. The palace was commissioned by Count Galler around 1690. There are arcades in the courtyard and a stucco ceiling can be seen in the vestibule to the staircase. The history of the Palais Galler lies in the dark until the 18th century. Count Wilhelm von Galler did not appear as the owner until 1728. In 1748 the city palace was given the name "Breunerisches Haus". From 1785 to 1803 it was owned by Countess Elisabeth von Galler. After that, the owners changed often. From 1938 to 1945 the palace was the seat of the Gauleitung of the NSDAP . Palais Galler Karmeliterplatz Graz1.jpg
Trinity Column The Trinity Column on Karmeliterplatz originally stood at the confluence of the main square with Sackstrasse. The column , donated in 1680 by Emperor Leopold I after the plague ended , had to be removed from the old location on the one hand because of its dilapidation and on the other hand because of the traffic situation and placed on Karmeliterplatz. The bronze group of the Holy Trinity was created by Andreas Marx. It stands on a spiral column that was cast by Medardus Reig . The two sandstone figures on the base show depictions of Saints Rochus and Sebastian. Both were probably made by the sculptor Johann Jacob Schoy . Holy Trinity Column Karmeliterplatz Graz.jpg
