Gloria Yvette Álvarez Cross (born March 9, 1985 in Guatemala City , Guatemala ) is a Guatemalan moderator, author and activist.

Life

Álvarez was born in Guatemala City to a Cuban father and mother with Hungarian roots. She spent part of her childhood in Honduras and El Salvador because of her father's work . After finishing school, she attended the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala, where she studied political science and international relations and graduated cum laude . She then obtained two advanced degrees: a master's degree in politics and economics from Georgetown University , USA, and a master's degree in international development from La Sapienza University in Rome . She also studied anthropology, culture and international development work at the KU Leuven in Belgium , but did not obtain a degree in this course. She speaks Spanish, English and Italian.

During her studies she worked as a radio presenter for a while. After graduating, she first started working as a community manager for a bank and thus came into contact with social media. She began using social networks for political activism and joined the National Civic Movement. She is now the project manager for this movement. She also works as a television and radio presenter. In the radio show "Glorias Fridays" she presents ideas for improving the country every week.

In 2014, she gave a high-profile speech to the youth parliament in Zaragoza on the use of technology to fight populism. Since then she has been considered one of the leading voices of the libertarian youth in Latin America. In the following years she supported various protest movements in other Latin American countries and participated in over 250 conferences across the continent. In her speeches, she advocates the fight against corruption and populism, the use of technology and the provision of education. In 2019, she also spoke before the EU Parliament. She has also authored three books.

In 2019, Álvarez ran for the presidential election in Guatemala , but was not allowed to run because she had not reached the minimum age of 40.
