Gloria Castro
Gloria Castro is a Colombian ballet dancer and teacher.
Gloria Castro grew up as one of fifteen children in a family in the Barrio Santa Rosa of Cali . She began dancing alongside her professional training and soon began performing in Cali. When her family moved to New York, they went to Italy. There she became a member of the ballet at the Teatro Máximo de Palermo and had performances in the Arena di Verona .
She later lived in Czechoslovakia and attended the theater class of the Spaniard Pepe Monleón . In 1970 she returned to Colombia, where in 1978 she founded the Instituto Colombiano de Ballet Clasico ( Incolballet ), the first professional and state-sponsored ballet school in Colombia. After performing as a dancer for the last time in 1980 (in the second act of Swan Lake ), she devoted herself entirely to the work of a ballet teacher.
In 2007 she received the Medalla al Mérito Vallecaucano from the government of Valle del Cauca for the promotion of the region's culture and ballet.
