Glueckstal Lutheran Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Glueckstal Lutheran Church is an Evangelical Lutheran pioneer church in Kidder County in the US state of North Dakota . It is located 25 km south of the village of Tappen, free-standing on the Great Plains Dakotas.

history

Glueckstal was named after a village founded by German settlers in Russia near the Black Sea in the 18th century. Descendants of these settlers emigrated to North America and brought their Lutheran faith with them. Around 1900 the Lutheran missionary Heinrich Nagel began to preach on local farms as a mounted traveling preacher in southern North Dakota. In 1908 the first church building in Glueckstal was built from turf in the regional building tradition, as no other building material was available. Nagel initially looked after five parishes , so that reading services were held without clergymen, in which parishioners read from German-language sermon books.

In 1913 the parish had grown so much that the construction of a larger wooden church with a bell tower on donated building land could begin. Initially, the services continued to be held in German and until 1961 women and children sat on the left and the men on the right in the nave.

In June 1985 the last regular parish service was held in the church due to the departure of people from the region, but special services are still held irregularly. The parish belonged to the American Lutheran Church (ALC), which was merged into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America . In June 2008 the 100th anniversary of the building of the church was celebrated.
