The Gmeinder Type 440 PS is a three-axle diesel locomotive with hydraulic power transmission and rod drive. It was built by Gmeinder in 1958.

technical features

The drive motor is the water-cooled MWM 8-cylinder diesel engine W8V17.5 / 22 with supercharging, which achieves an output of 440 hp. This engine power is transmitted to the VOITH L 37 U fluid transmission via the damping clutch and cardan shaft. This is followed by a gear transmission, which enables forward and reverse travel, as well as switching between speed ranges I and II and transmits the driving force to the jackshaft located between the second and third gear sets. The jackshaft drives all three wheel sets via cranks, drive rods and coupling rods. The locomotive has an operating weight of around 42 tons and reaches a maximum speed of 30 km / h on a straight horizontal route in the shunting service and 60 km / h in the route service.

history

The locomotive 5044 was procured as a single piece by the then Federal Ministry of Defense, Dept. XI, Koblenz, with procurement order XI D 04c / 05/00288/08/56 for the material takeover group South II in Crailsheim. This locomotive type received the supply number 2210-12-120-5653 for the Bundeswehr.

Until the deadline in mid-2007, the locomotive was used for shunting tasks in the extensive facility of the main ammunition depot in Dorsten-Wulfen . On October 29, 2007, the machine left the Dorsten ammunition depot in the direction of Moers to the Vossloh -Werkstatt (VSFT) to carry out a general inspection. But this planned measure was stopped after the findings by the VSFT experts due to the cost-benefit ratio by the quality inspection service of the Bundeswehr. The decommissioning of the fifty-year-old locomotive was initiated. At the same time, the Military History Museum Dresden was informed about the retirement of the locomotive from active service, as another contemporary witness of the military railroad system of the Bundeswehr was now available for museum preservation. On September 2, 2008, the takeover by the MHM Dresden took place. The locomotive was loaded on December 22, 2008 in Moers and placed on the museum track in Westerburg on December 23, 2008. The association WEF 44 508 e. V. has taken over the locomotive as an exhibit for the special collection of Bundeswehr railway vehicles in the Westerburg adventure station.
