Goatlord is an American metal band.

history

Goatlord was founded in 1985 and released a first demo in June 1987, which is a mixture of Sludge and Death Metal ; in tape trading circles the demo is also known as Forever Black Dwell in Hell (after a verse from the song Unholy Black Slut ). The second demo, Sodomize the Goat , had a much more metallic sound. Goatlord's style became progressively slower, making the band one of the first representatives of Death Doom after Dream Death . After the recording of a promo cassette in 1991, tensions arose because of the stylistic development. The majority of the members were in favor of a slower, more bordun-heavy style, so the singer Ace Stills left Goatlord and continued to work with Doom Snake Cult.

Goatlord received a contract with Turbo Records and took her debut album with Mitch Harris of Napalm Death as a guest vocalist on. Ace Stills returned shortly before the mastering; When he recorded his vocal tracks, he dubbed Harris's, which are lost with it, without the band's knowledge. But he can be heard on other recordings as a background singer.

On the debut album Reflections of the Solstice , the band Death Doom plays with individual medium tempo passages, which is in the tradition of Hellhammer / Celtic Frost and slower passages from Bathory . Martin de Bruijn from Archaic-Magazine.com describes the album as one of the most underrated of the early 1990s.

In 2007, Nuclear War Now! Productions The Last Sodomy of Mary with unreleased recordings from the time of the debut Reflections of the Solstice and in the limited version other unreleased live and cover material. Originally, this material was supposed to be the basis for a second album. There was also a re-release of the JL America version of Reflections of the Solstice with bonus tracks and three songs with the vocals of Mitch Harris.

style

The group plays a slow, dark style that is strongly reminiscent of Hellhammer and combines elements of sludge, doom, death and black metal ; the band tried to combine stylistic elements of their preferred groups such as Bathory, Hellhammer, Saint Vitus , Voivod and Sodom . Volkmar Weber from Rock Hard describes the style of the demos as "[z] ahem end-time art, pitch black and goat fixated, all-embracing satanic". The lyrics are about devil worship and horror stories, but the members were not satanists themselves ; according to Jeff Nardone, however, the music should contain satanic references; the members tried to be as brutal as possible lyrically.
