The Goethe Monument in Rome

The Goethe monument is located in Rome on Viale Goethe in the Villa Borghese . It was designed by the German sculptor Gustav Eberlein on behalf of Kaiser Wilhelm II , who gave it to the city of Rome on the occasion of his birthday in 1902. However, it was the Italian sculptor Valentino Casali who implemented Eberlein's design in his studio in Berlin. The marble work was on August 5, 1904 in the presence of the Italian King Viktor Emanuel III. revealed.

The entire monument is nine meters high. The young Johann Wolfgang von Goethe rises in its center on an Ionic-Corinthian capital (so-called composite capital ) . At the base it is surrounded by three smaller groups of sculptures. At the back are Faust and Mephisto. The group symbolizes the philosophy and the cultural nation of Germany . On the front left, Mignon and the harper are shown as an expression of lyrical poetry and the cultural nation of Italy . The sculptural group Iphigenia and Orestes is on the front right. It symbolizes the dramatic poetry as well as the cultural nation Greece .

A 1.75 m draft of the monument by Gustav Eberlein can currently be viewed in the building yard in Hannoversch Münden .
