The Goethe monument on the market

The Goethe Monument is a monument in honor of Johann Wolfgang Goethe on the market square of the city of Ilmenau in Thuringia.

During his time in Weimar, Goethe visited Ilmenau a total of 28 times, as he pursued professional tasks in Ilmenau because of his work as Mining Minister. Holiday stays in Ilmenau and the Thuringian Forest are also known. As a result of this close connection, the need arose in Ilmenau as early as the end of the 19th century to put a monument to Goethe on the market, which, however, initially did not occur. Plans from the 1980s failed for financial reasons.

In 1996 the idea of such a monument was taken up again. The draft was - mainly because of the lack of resemblance to the contemporary portraits. - very controversial. (See also the list of Goethe monuments .)

The location of the monument is the market square in front of the office building, where Goethe usually spent the night when he was out on official business. It is made of bronze and was created by the sculptor Klaus Glutting from Homburg, one of Ilmenau's twin towns . It depicts an elderly, life-size man sitting on a bench, next to which there is space for other people. This has become a popular photo opportunity for tourists, and on Goethe's birthday the figure is brightly wreathed for the press.

The Goethe fountain in the Ilmenau main cemetery is older than this Goethebank . This listed ensemble with the relief of a Bauhaus student was inaugurated in 1932 and is included in the list of cultural monuments in Ilmenau . On a website of the city of Ilmenau it is referred to as " a kind of urban Goethe monument ".
