history
The company's roots go back to the Gotaas-Larsen shipping company founded in 1946. This began in 1970 with the operation of LNG tankers. The first new building, the Hilli built in 1975 , is still in operation at Golar today. Gotaas-Larsen was initially taken over by Osprey Maritime in 1997. Osprey Maritime, in turn, was taken over in May 2001 by World Shipholding, a company owned by the Norwegian-Cypriot entrepreneur John Fredriksen . The fleet of six LNG tankers has grown to 13 units since the takeover, including the two ships Golar Winter and Golar Spirit , the first two tank storage vessels with reliquefaction systems ( English Floating Storage and Regasification Unit , FSRU).
The Golar Freeze , NR Satu , Golar Grand , Golar Maria , Golar Igloo, and Golar Eskimo were sold to Golar Partners for a total of $ 1.9 billion .
