Gold under the Snow is a novel by the adventurer and writer Nicolas Vanier , which is about the gold rush on the Klondike in 1897.

action

In 1897, the San Francisco-based dockworker Matt received the news of the gold discovery on the Klondike before most others. He sets off for the far north with a few people who know him. After an arduous journey on which he barely escapes death several times, he finally arrives in the new gold prospecting metropolis of Dawson . Like many others, he has to realize that he is too late: the best claims have already been awarded. So he moves north with sled dogs , which he previously bought on the way to Dawson, to settle in the lonely wilderness and continue to look for gold here. He only returns to town to visit Blanquette, an old love affair that happens to be here too. But soon he has to realize that she is not the true love of his life.

In the wilderness, he keeps running into Mersh, an old trapper . On one of his journeys through untouched nature, he comes to an Indian village. Here he falls in love at first sight with Nastasia, who, as it turns out later, is Mersh's daughter. But after she has no interest in him, Matt continues looking for gold. When he discovers a large gold vein, an exciting pursuit develops: Mersh has been hired by the Indian tribe to kill Matt if he finds the vein. It is important for the Indians to prevent another nature-destroying gold rush like the one on the Klondike. On the run, Matt meets Nastasia again and wins her love by convincing her that he is no longer interested in gold.

The novel ends in front of Matt's log cabin. Mersh, who is waiting here for him, doesn't believe the story and when his daughter Nastasia stands between him and Matt, Mersh is forced to shoot himself.
