Merritt Island is a 2023-acre island in the Sacramento River delta , just ten kilometers south of the city of Sacramento . The soil consists of a heavy and fertile clay soil . The cooling sea breezes from the nearby San Francisco Bay and the frequent early morning fog create a cool maritime climate that benefits the early ripening grape variety Chardonnay. Most of the vines are not processed in the AVA area.
