description
The bridge was opened on November 7, 1859 as part of the Dumfries – Castle Douglas – Kirkcudbright railway. Engineer John Miller junior provided the design . After the line was closed in June 1965, the tracks were removed and the viaduct has not been used since then.
The masonry viaduct is about two kilometers southwest of Cargenbridge. Describing a wide arch, it spans a valley with 18 round arches . Its masonry consists of red, embossed stone blocks. There are pilasters along the pillars , which eventually lead to alternative bays for pedestrians. A cornice runs beneath the parapets, which are finished off with natural stone caps .
