Cargenbridge is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or in the traditional county of Kirkcudbrightshire . It is located a few hundred meters southwest of Dumfries on the right bank of the Cargen Pow , as the lower reaches of the Cargen Water is called before it flows into the Nith .
history
At Cargenbridge, the Department of Utilities had a chemical and explosives factory built in 1939. After the end of the war, the plant went into private hands, which led to a change in the product range. The British chemical company ICI switched its production to plastic products and dyes. Since 1998, part of the closed system has been operated by DuPont . The vacated areas were developed into an industrial park.
traffic
Cargenbridge is just off the A711 . The trunk road connects Dumfries with Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright, among others . The important east-west connection A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ) runs north of the industrial park . In Dumfries, various other A-roads can be reached within a few kilometers. The railway line, opened in 1859, once ran from Dumfries via Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright through Cargenbridge. However, the village did not have its own train station. The Goldielea Viaduct southwest of Cargenbridge is evidence of the line that has since been dismantled .
