Norman Marshall Villeneuve

Norman Marshall Villeneuve (born May 29, 1938 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( drums ) who was active in the music scene in Montreal and later in Toronto .

Live and act

Villeneuve, who started out as a tap dancer and singer, received piano lessons from Daisy Peterson Sweeney ( Oscar Peterson's sister ) from the age of eight . In addition, he taught himself how to play the drums. He started out on the Quebec jazz scene at the age of 14 as a drummer. In the 1960s and 1970s he played in the bands of numerous jazz clubs in Montreal, where he accompanied numerous musicians traveling through. He toured North and Latin America with Oliver Jones . He received the Félix Award for his work on the Jones album Just in Time .

In 1974 he moved to Toronto, where he soon also played a central role in the clubs. He has performed four times in the Sound of Toronto Jazz series at concerts with different groups: with the Terry Lukiwski Quartet (1980), with the Martin Franklin Quartet (1983), with his Norman Marshall Villeneuve Sextet (1991) and with the Ken Fornetran Quartet (1993). He toured Canada with his sextet in 1991 and recorded his debut album Jazz Message in 1992 . In the same year he worked on Junior Mance's album Here 'Tis (Play the Music of Dizzy Gillespie ) with. In the 1990s he also played with Ken Skinner and the Jazzmongers, with Oliver Jones and Reg Schwager ( Portraits in Jazz (A Tribute to Wes Montgomery ) ), around 2010 in the backing band of singer Ori Dagan ( S'Cat Got My Tongue ). In the field of jazz he was involved in eight recording sessions between 1992 and 2010.

In 2012 he established the Norman Marshall Villeneuve Percussion Award as an award that was given to young talents every year. At the end of 2013 he moved back to Montreal.
