Daisy Peterson Sweeney

Daisy Elita Peterson Sweeney (* May 7, 1920 in Montreal as Daisy Peterson; † August 11, 2017 ) was a Canadian pianist and organist who also made a name for herself as a piano teacher.

Career

Peterson Sweeney came from a musical family; the jazz pianist Oscar Peterson was her brother and learned to play the piano with her. She studied at McGill University with Paul de Marky, Karl Steiner and Phillips Motley. Then she taught; her students included Oliver Jones , Joe Sealey, Reg Wilson, Ken Skinner, and Norman Marshall Villeneuve .

Peterson Sweeney has also served as an organist in two parishes in Montreal, Union United Church and St Jude's Anglican . Together with Trevor W. Payne , she founded the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir in 1982 for the 75th anniversary of the Union United Church . She is the mother of Olympic athlete and television journalist Sylvia Sweeney .

In 1987 she was honored with an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University . In 2005, four gospel concerts dedicated to her took place on the occasion of the Lachine Canal anniversary celebrations .
