The Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir is a Canadian gospel choir . It was founded in Montreal ( Québec ) in 1982 and has performed several times in Europe, including Berlin in 1992.

history

In 1974 Trevor W. Payne founded the Montreal Black Community Youth Choir in Montreal . To mark the 75th anniversary of the Union United Church in Montreal, this choir performed together with the parish gospel choir and soloists such as Oliver Jones . The performance was suggested as a one-off by Daisy Peterson Sweeney , sister of Oscar Peterson , and Reverend Frank Gabourel of the Union United Church . The joint choir then renamed itself the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir .

The Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir continued to exist due to the success of this gig and toured in addition to performances in Montreal, Canada and the United States. Several tours have taken the choir to Europe, where the choir also worked with Klaus König . The repertoire includes traditional and contemporary gospel music as well as Gregorian chant , African music, modern jazz and oratorios by Johann Sebastian Bach . The choir performs annually in its hometown of Montreal.

Joint appearances were made with, among others, Celine Dion , Oliver Jones , Martine St. Clair, the New Kids on the Block , Foreigner , Salome Bey , Sylvie Desgroseilliers and Ray Charles . The choir has performed at various festivals including the Montreal International Jazz Festival , JazzFest Berlin and the Stratford Festival of Canada . The choir also sang for Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II on state visits to Canada .

Thirty years after it was founded, an anniversary concert was held in February 2013 in the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall at Concordia University .
