Gold treasure from Niederzier

Details of the Celtic gold treasure from Niederzier-Hambach

The gold treasure from Niederzier was discovered in 1978 near Niederzier when a Celtic settlement was excavated in the area of the local brown coal mine . It consists of 46 gold coins from the first century BC as well as an arm and two chokers .

Due to signs of wear and tear, it is assumed that the gold pieces were in use before they were buried. Presumably they were forgotten when they left the settlement as planned in view of Julius Caesar's Gallic campaign ; the reason for the burying is unclear. Comparative finds from Ireland, Britain, Belgium and France are similar to the Niederzierer find and suggest that they are of the same origin.

The Niederzier gold treasure is exhibited in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn.
