Gollwitz outdoor pool

The Gollwitzer outdoor pool was the only outdoor pool in the east of Munich and existed from 1936 to 1983.

The outdoor pool was located in Munich's Steinhausen district in the Bogenhausen district on what was then Riemer Strasse (now Zamdorfer Strasse).

To the north of the swimming pool was the Zigeunerschlucht rider camp . That is why the bath was popularly known as the “Gypsy Bath”.

history

The outdoor pool was built in 1936 by the Reichsbahn and named after its president Gollwitzer. From 1938 it was used by the SA as a sports facility. During the Second World War , the bath was badly damaged by bombs, and many furnishings (pipes, paving, etc.) were looted.

In 1948 the Free Watersport Association Munich eV leased the site from the city and renovated the outdoor pool. In 1949 it was opened to the general public.

In 1983 the outdoor pool was closed. The property was sold to the Süddeutscher Verlag , which set up its printing center here, in which u. a. the Süddeutsche Zeitung is printed. The water sports club was relocated to Zamdorf. However, he was only able to build a small swimming pool there and has been using the public baths of Stadtwerke München since then .

The water basin had a size of 40 × 18 m and was 3.80 m deep. It was fed with groundwater from a pump, so it was often very cold.

There was a diving tower with 5 m and diving boards with 1 m and 3 m.
