Gonzalo Blumel Mac-Iver

Gonzalo Fernando Blumel Mac-Iver (born May 17, 1978 in Talca ) is a Chilean environmental engineer and politician. He was Chilean Minister of the Interior from October 2019 to July 2020. His political career began in 2005 when he was the secretary of the planning office in the municipality of Futrono. He then worked as a researcher on the Environment in the Think Tank Liberdad y Desarrollo. In the first Piñera cabinet, he held various management positions in the Secretaría General de la Presidencia.

Biography and education

Blumel is the son of Juan Enrique Blumel Méndez, a grandson of the German researcher Santiago Blümel and Rosa Ancán, a daughter of a Mapuchelonco from Nueva Imperial. His mother Emma Francisca Mac-Iver is the great-granddaughter of Enrique Mac-Iver, a politician of the Partido Radical .

He went to the Imaculada Concepción school in Vitacura and Sagrados Corazones in Manquehue. He then studied environmental engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago. In 2007 he began a master's degree in economics from Birmingham University , which he completed a year later.

Private

He has been married to the lawyer Paulina Larrea since October 16, 2004, with whom he has three children. He is musical, plays the guitar on family occasions and sings in a choir in a parish.
