Good housekeeping

Good Housekeeping is a women's magazine owned by the Hearst Corporation media group. It brings articles on topics such as health, nutrition, home, gardening, fashion, beauty and travel. There are also literary articles and reports on prominent or non-prominent people and their fates. Also known is the Good Housekeeping Research Institute , which awards a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for tested products.

history

The magazine was founded on May 2, 1885 by Clark W. Bryan in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. In 1922 a British edition was published in the same style as the American model. In 1911 the magazine was sold to the Hearst Corporation. At the time it had a circulation of 300,000 copies. In 1966, Good Housekeeping reached 5.5 million readers.

Literary contributions were u. a. Supplied by Somerset Maugham , Edwin Markham , Frances Parkinson Keyes , AJ Cronin , Virginia Woolf and Evelyn Waugh .

The Experiment Station , the predecessor of the Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI), was founded in 1900. The experimental kitchen and the test laboratory for household appliances were officially established in 1910. The magazine has been awarding the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval since 1909 . Products bearing the seal are guaranteed for two years. So far, more than 5000 products have received the seal.

In April 1912, a year after William Randolph Hearst acquired the magazine, Harvey W. Wiley, appointee for the US Food and Drug Administration , became director of the GHRI. The magazine advocated healthy and pure food as early as 1905, helping to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
