The Google 3D Gallery is an online platform offered by the US company Google LLC , on which modelers can upload, download and share 3D models. Access is possible directly via a browser or via the in-house software Google SketchUp and its integrated component browser . Furthermore, the 3D gallery can be seen as the primary interface for publishing models of real buildings in Google Earth .

Functions

The website allows users to search the online archive for model collections or individual models. All models can be viewed online as a 3D view in the browser and, if the creator of the models allows this, also downloaded. It is possible for the user to share links to a model directly from the 3D gallery via various social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

As a registered user, the following functions are available:

  • Uploading models in SKP or KMZ format
  • Release of his models for Google Earth
  • Organize models in their own collections.
  • Collaboration of several people on a model
  • When the log is activated, the version history of a model can be followed
  • Track call statistics for a model

Interface to Google Earth

The 3D gallery is the primary interface for integrating real and geo-referenced models into the 3D layers of Google Earth. After uploading such a model to the 3D gallery, it is checked with regard to the acceptance criteria for 3D buildings. This takes place in several steps: on the one hand, automatically by technical verification of the model with the help of algorithms, and on the other hand, manually by a trained team of Google employees. Google Earth's 3D layer is usually updated weekly.

Model categories

The models in the 3D gallery can basically be divided into three different types:

Georeferenced models
These models of real buildings were either created with Google SketchUp and placed with their coordinates on Google Earth, or were made with the help of the building creation tool.
Non-georeferenced models
This includes all models created with SketchUp that are not intended for the 3D plane in Google Earth.
Dynamic components
Dynamic components are models, such as cabinets, that can be dynamically adapted by entering the required dimensions. This is why product manufacturers often offer models of their building components in this form in the 3D gallery.

layout

When the 3D gallery started in 2006, the page consisted only of a search box and two bars in which the most popular and recently uploaded models were displayed. Half a year later you could organize your models in collections and the website was supplemented by a sidebar with helpful links. From the end of 2007, two more horizontal bars were added to the home page, which represent the collections presented as a cover flow . At the end of 2011, a menu bar in the Google+ design was added to the 3D gallery .

Identification mark

3D gallery identification mark

On May 27, 2010, at the request of the community, the so-called “3D gallery identification marks” ( badges ) were introduced. You get these small medals as a participant in conferences, competitions or when you reach a certain number of 3D models that have been transferred to Google Earth.
