Cover Flow in Songbird

Cover Flow is a 3D virtual environment for displaying graphical elements, known as navigation for music collections. The covers of the music albums are virtually positioned in a row. As in a catalog, you can leaf through a music collection with an input device (e.g. the mouse ).

Cover Flow was developed by Steel Skies, the last version of which was beta 1.997. Apple then bought this technology and integrated it into their software. However, the company Mirror Worlds Technologies Inc. asserted patent rights and prevailed in court on October 5, 2010. On April 4, 2011, this judgment was overturned. The cover flow technology was available in Apple's iTunes version 7.0 to version 10. On October 5, 2007, Apple announced the integration of Cover Flow with the iPod nano 3G, iPod classic, and iPod touch. It is included in the iPhone , which has been available in the USA since June 29, 2007, as well as in the 4th generation (4G) iPod Nano and the 5th generation (5G) iPod Nano.

Cover Flow has been offered as a folder view since Mac OS X Leopard , which in conjunction with the “Quick Look” option enables files to be previewed.

The cover flow effect is also supported by other platforms. On Windows and Linux, the open source media player Songbird offers a cover flow animation for selecting albums. For Linux, it is possible to switch between different programs in the cover-flow style with the help of the Compiz composition and window manager or KDE's KWin (Cover-Switch from version 4.1).

Cover Flow was completely removed in version 11.0 of Apple's iTunes.
