Google Trends is an online service provided by Google LLC that provides information on which search terms were entered and how often by users of the Google search engine . The results are set in relation to the total search volume and have been available in weekly resolution since the beginning of 2004 for the entire world or individual regions. Google Insights for Search was discontinued as a standalone service on September 27, 2012 and integrated into Google Trends.

With the help of Google Trends, the popularity of individual terms can be analyzed over time, which allows conclusions to be drawn about emerging trends in society. In particular, the search terms related to flu were used to predict the spread of flu in the population. Since the relative frequency of certain search terms correlates very strongly with the proportion of influenza-related doctor visits , a weekly estimate for influenza cases can be published. It could also be shown that there is a correlation between search queries for company names and their transaction volumes on the stock exchange.
