Google Correlate was an online service provided by Google Inc. that provided information on how strongly the frequency of several search terms correlated with one another in a specified time interval . The result was output as a correlation coefficient . Correlations could also be drawn in by yourself.

Another possibility was to compare search terms within the states of the USA . The data had been available in weekly resolution for the entire world or for individual regions since January 2003.

With the help of this application, the search frequency of individual terms in defined time periods could be analyzed in relation to other search terms, which allows conclusions to be drawn about emerging trends in society. It was also possible to upload your own data sets in CSV file format.

Google discontinued Google Correlate on December 15, 2019 due to low demand.

Differentiation from Google Trends

The difference to Google Trends was that it was not the frequency of an individual search term that was analyzed, but rather the frequency of the search terms in relation to others. If you entered a search term on Google Trends, you received the activity of the search term within a defined period of time. With Google Correlate, you entered your target search term and received a list of search terms with a similar frequency over time. The degree of relationship was expressed by the correlation coefficient. This numerical value is 1.0 if there is a complete match and 0.0 if there is no match. Negative values were also possible and described a negative correlation.

example

People often get sick during winter time. Cough is a typical symptom. If you want to know which type of cough occurs most frequently, you search for “ cough ” in Google Correlate . Among the first results are:

Correlation factor search term
0.9847 cough
0.9837 dry cough
0.9403 acc acute

It can therefore be concluded that dry cough followed by dry cough is the most common type of cough.
