The river cruise ship with four passenger decks was built in 1988 for the shipping company "Wolschskoje Objedinjonnoje Rechnoje Parochodstwo" (Volga river shipping company) in Gorky . It belongs to a series of 27 + 1 ( Vladimir Vysotskiy - not finished) ships of the Dmitriy Furmanov class manufactured from 1983 to 1991 , a further development of the Vladimir Ilyich class by the same shipyard. The launch took place on November 6, 1987, after which the hull, main and middle decks were towed individually over the Elbe downstream to Hamburg, because the bridge height on the Elbe was not sufficient for the ships of Project 302. The assembly took place in Hamburg and the rest of the work at the shipyard in Wismar, where a diesel drive with three main engines from Gorki (Soviet Union) was installed. The Soviet flag was hoisted on October 6, 1988, and that day is considered the ship's birthday. The Georgiy Chicherin was operated as a hotel in Riga in the winter of 1988/1989 and in 1989 on the routes from Leningrad to Astrakhan in the Soviet Union . In autumn 1991 the ships Georgiy Chicherin , Lenin , Leonid Sobolev , Yuriy Andropov and Zosima Shashkov went to the World Exhibition Expo'92 in Spain , where they were used as a hotel.
