Goossen van der Weyden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goossen van der Weyden (* approx. 1465 in Brussels ; † after 1538) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Goossen van der Weyden was a grandson of Rogier van der Weyden . Pieter van der Weyden (* 1437; † after 1514), Rogier's son and Goossen's father, inherited the Brussels workshop from Rogier in 1464. Goossen probably worked in his father's workshop until 1492 when he moved to Lier , where he painted the organ doors of Sint Gummaruskerk . He ran a successful workshop in Lier and in 1498 bought a large house. At that time, his fame must have reached far beyond Lier, as he became a citizen of Antwerp a year later . Goossen moved his workshop to Antwerp around 1500, presumably because of the many wealthy buyers and influential cartridges. There he employed at least eight apprentices between 1503 and 1522.

Thanks to his distinctive style and well-documented assignments, Goossen's career can be followed relatively easily.
