description

The Gorton School, probably completed in 1880, is isolated on the A847 that connects Bridgend with Portnahaven . The rocky coast of Loch Indaal Bay runs across the street. The building was built of cut natural stone and is not plastered. From the one-storey main wing, a short, acentric side wing leads off in an easterly direction, into which a triplet window and a blind round window are let in on the gable side. To the left of the wing there is the entrance door to the living area and another triplet window. On the right-hand side, a triple window is followed by a side porch with the entrance to the classroom. The back is provided with a total of six symmetrically arranged windows. The main and side wings each end with slate roofs .

The building is still in its original state with minor changes. It is considered a good architectural example of school building in Scotland in the years after compulsory schooling.
