Bridgend ( Gaelic : Beul an Átha ) is a small town on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located at the head of the Loch Indaal bay about 3.5 km northeast of Bowmore , the capital of the island, and 17 km north of the Port Ellen ferry terminal . The closest town is Bowmore.
The scattered settlement is a few hundred meters away from the coastline on the banks of the Sorn , which flows into the sea beyond the village. To the northwest is Islay House with its scattered buildings and extensive grounds. Bridgend used to be the location of the bank on Islay as well as the telegraph station and was connected to the ferry ports of Port Ellen and Port Askaig by carriage connections . Today the island's most important road, the A846, runs through Bridgend, which leads from Ardbeg in the south via Port Askaig to the neighboring island of Jura . In Bridgend the A847 branches off, which runs via Port Charlotte to Portnahaven .
