Gotland Basin

Map of the main basins of the Baltic Sea: number 7 corresponds to the western Gotland basin and number 8 to the eastern Gotland basin.

The Gotland Basin is one of the main basins in the Baltic Sea . The basin is divided into the western and eastern Gotland Basin, with the western Gotland Basin stretching from the west coast of Gotland to the east coast of Sweden and the eastern Gotland Basin from the east coast of Gotland to the Baltic States .

The deepest point of the eastern basin is the Gotland Depth with a depth of 249 meters below sea level. The western part of the Gotland Basin is home to the deepest point in the Baltic Sea, the Landsorttief , which is 459 meters below sea level.

The Gotland Basin is one of the deepest oxygen-free zones in the Baltic Sea. Due to the rare exchange of water on the sea floor, the oxygen there is consumed and hydrogen sulfide is produced. This leads to the death of all living beings on the sea floor and in the lower water layers and thus to the creation of a so-called “death zone”. These dead zones can only be revived through the influence of new, oxygen-rich water.
