ZDF has been broadcasting church services regularly since 1979 , at the beginning every fortnight, since 1986 in a weekly alternation between Protestant and Catholic . The number of viewers has grown steadily since then and is currently (as of November 30, 2004) around 900,000 viewers per program. The ZDF editor Ingo Witt takes care of the broadcasts editorially. The church services are supervised by the churches: on the Catholic side by the Catholic television work , on the Protestant side by the broadcasting representative of the Evangelical Church in Germany .
Since May 18, 2008, Orthodox and Evangelical Free Church communities have also been taken into account in the program planning.
