history

House II on Wilsnacker Straße for secondary level 1 (grades 7-10)

On August 21, 1991 the symbolic handover of the keys from Bauunion AG Schwerin to Hartmut Schneider, director of the grammar school, took place. Already in January Schneider tried to convince the assembly of the city council of a grammar school in Perleberg. In June 1993 there was finally the first Abitur in Perleberg for eleven years. The school is named after the theologian and philosopher Gottfried Arnold (1666–1714), who has close ties to Perleberg.

Together with the Kreismusikschule Prignitz , the Gottfried-Arnold-Gymnasium put the musical Becky Sharp on the legs for the 780th anniversary of Perleberg in 2019 . As early as 2001, a school musical with the name "Joseph" was performed. The musical Rats followed in 2004 and Line 1 in 2014 .

The school has a development association with around 120 members and its own school newspaper, the GAG Times. The school newspaper publishes its reports exclusively online. The editorial team currently consists of an editor-in-chief, ten editors and two freelancers. Furthermore, a school choir has existed at the school since 1991.

In the 2018/2019 school year, 29 teachers are teaching at the grammar school. There are around 320 students in total.

The grammar school regularly takes part in the competition “Youth trains for the Olympics”. In 2015, the national finals were reached in the “Athletics” category.

History of the main building

The main building, House I, of the Gottfried-Arnold-Gymnasium during the Christmas concert 2019.

For the 20th anniversary of the grammar school, the history of House I of the school at Puschkinstrasse 13 was researched in more detail. Accordingly, a first-order secondary school was established in 1864 with limited entitlement to study. A few years later, around 1882, the school was renamed the “Royal High School”. At the same time, the city of Perleberg ceded sponsorship to the state government of the Mark Brandenburg. In 1909 a reform or secondary school was established, as a result of which the name of the school was changed.

In 1933/34 there was a brief merger with the Lyceum to save costs. However, this did not prove itself and the merger was reversed. At the end of the Second World War, the reform or secondary school moved to the lyceum, and the building was cleared in 1944. The former school building was then used as a hospital.

Until 1994 the school building was under Soviet use, initially as a hospital and later as a school again. The municipal vocational school "Alexander Pushkin" was established as early as 1949. The building on Puschkinstraße has only been used as a grammar school again since 1994. Today the upper secondary level (grades eleven and twelve) and sometimes also tenth grades are taught in the school building. House II for grades seven to ten is located on Wilsnacker Straße.

School newspaper

The school newspaper has a long tradition at the Gottfried-Arnold-Gymnasium Perleberg. The first and, for the time being, last print edition of a newspaper from schoolchildren appeared in 1996, at that time under the name “Querdenker”. Ten years later, the school newspaper “Der Arnold” was founded at the Perleberger Gymnasium. It stayed with a few copies. Since December 1st, 2009 the “GAG-Times” has existed at the school. Ten print editions were made, guided by students.

In 2013, the students at the time decided to quit the school newspaper for school reasons. Eighth graders took the daily newspaper “ Der Prignitzer ” to their side so that the GAG-Times could continue to exist. In 2013, Marcus J. Pfeiffer became editor-in-chief of the newspaper. There were three more print editions. The school newspaper's Facebook page was launched in April 2013. In the 2013/2014 school year, the pupils again decided to stop reading the school newspaper for school reasons. The then editor-in-chief was able to set up a new editorial team again.

The last print edition was published in June 2014. Due to the high expenditure in sales and printing, it was decided to continue a purely online school newspaper, initially exclusively via Facebook. The school newspaper could report up-to-date and free of charge. On March 19, the GAG-Times blog went online. In the 2015/2016 school year, an editorial team consisting of seventh and eighth graders came together again under the direction of Marcus J. Pfeiffer.

On March 21st, the editorial team was named “Best Online Student Newspaper of the State of Brandenburg” at the school newspaper competition of the state of Brandenburg in the 2015/2016 school year and received a special prize from the state press conference in the plenary hall of the Brandenburg state parliament in Potsdam . On September 15, 2016, the members of the editorial team were able to be part of the ZDF Morgenmagazin audience in Berlin's capital studio as part of the award ceremony. This was followed by an interview with moderator Mitri Sirin .

On September 22nd, 2016 the school newspaper started the whole day of the Gottfried-Arnold-Gymnasium into the next school year. New students were enthusiastic about the offer and from now on they were actively involved as editors. In the 2017/2018 school year, the editors linked the school newspaper's blog to the school website. From now on there is a page with all information and reports. The Prignitzer press agency took over the logistic, technical and educational management of the GAG-Times. Shortly afterwards, Philipp Falkenhagen became editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, who has continued the editorial work ever since. From June 2019 the school newspaper accompanied the school musical 2019/20, "Becky Sharp", with a newsletter, regular press releases and photos of the performances. In December 2019 the school newspaper celebrated its tenth anniversary under the name "GAG-Times". The last performance of the school musical could not take place in March due to the corona virus, on this occasion the online newspaper organized a live stream with the recording of the premiere from September 2019.

Student Council

The school's particularly democratic approach has stood out for years. Every two years, all students have the opportunity to elect their student representatives at a general student assembly. Regular meetings and constant communication with parent representatives, teachers and school management ensure a harmonious school policy. Jeremias Telschow has been the student representative since the 2017/18 school year. In the 2019/20 school year, his term of office was extended through elections in the first general student assembly, and Edgar Stütz and Philipp Falkenhagen were elected as his deputies. Most recently, the team of three received a great deal of support from politicians, teachers and students through their public demands to the Ministry of Education to better adapt school structures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

School choir

There has been a school choir at the school since the school was founded 25 years ago. One of the first appearances was the celebration of the naming of the Gottfried-Arnold-Gymnasium in the St. Jacobi Church. At the turn of the millennium, the special school group “SongSouci” was created. The young musicians performed many times and won several prizes at the school. Over time, the school choir developed a number of traditions, including the annual Christmas and summer concerts, where the choir presents the results of its work over the past few weeks and months. The choir is led by musician Frank Wedel. The choir traditionally meets weekly on Wednesdays to make music together. Since the 2019/20 school year, the group has also received support from music teacher Felix Mundt .

School musicals

After the first three successful school musicals, "Joseph", "Rats" and "Line 1", the Perleberger Gymnasium presented the school musical "Becky Sharp" in the 2019/20 school year. In cooperation with the district music school, the city of Perleberg and other contributors, the musical was realized with the sponsoring association as the organizer. Renè Hill practiced acting with the students, Katharina Fährmann developed the choreography, Birgit Bockler accompanied the soloists and Frank Wedel formed the choir. The project was instrumentally supported by a specially founded orchestra under the direction of Petko Petkov.

The choreography for the dance "London" during the performance in the Wittenberg Kulturhaus.

“The musical by Claus Martin is based on the novel“ Vanity Fair ”by William Makepeace Thackeray from 1849. The action takes place in London in 1810. Becky Sharp has everything you could want : She is young, beautiful and smart. Unfortunately, however, she lacks social relationships and the necessary title of nobility. Equipped with nothing but talent, she tries to make a career in London's high society. After several unsuccessful attempts at advancing through a beneficial marriage, she decides to take other paths in the pursuit of success. And the more unscrupulous it becomes, the more successful it becomes. Greed, envy, jealousy and vanity are the decisive driving forces in this vicious society painting from the 19th century and thus make the upcoming school musical rich in aspects, but also demanding. "

In September, more than 500 spectators attended the premiere of the school musical "Becky Sharp" in the Perleberg Rolandhalle. There the pupils opened the Perleberg city festival "Fire and Flame". At the beginning of February, another performance took place in the Wittenberg Kulturhaus, and the number of visitors was similar. On March 21, the school musical should find its finale with a performance in the Pritzwalker Kulturhaus. Unfortunately, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the advice of the health department , the performance could not take place. However, there was a performance on the Internet that met with great interest. The musical was followed live by around 1000 spectators.
