The Gottfried Merzbacher Station is a research facility in the Kyrgyz part of the Tian Shans on the Engiltschek glacier . It has been operated by the German Research Center for Geosciences Potsdam and the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (ZAIAG) since 2009 . The station is named after the German explorer Gottfried Merzbacher (1843–1926).

location

The station is located near the border triangle between Kyrgyzstan , Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China in northeast Kyrgyzstan at an altitude of 3420 meters. Near the station is the Merzbacher See (see section in the article Engiltschek Glacier ) and the meeting of the Northern and Southern Englitschek. The level on which the station is located has a size of approximately 200 × 100 meters and is named Merzbacher-Wiese.

Structure of the station

The project to set up the station arose from a long-term cooperation between German and Central Asian researchers and began with the Inyltschek expedition in 2009 , which was supposed to push ahead with the construction of the station. A team of 30 alpinists , researchers and technicians lived for several weeks in tents on the Merzbacher meadow and prepared the location for the construction of the station. Among other things, steel foundations were set which were set in concrete and thus later ensure stable anchoring of the containers in the ground. After three weeks of preparation, the six containers were transported by helicopter to a height of 3420 meters and anchored there on the foundations. Another container was set up on the opposite side of the valley as a secondary station. From May 2010, the containers were obtained from German and Kyrgyz researchers.

Research work

The Gottfried Merzbacher station is used in particular to observe the Englitschek glacier and the Merzbacher lake. The researchers carry out glaciological , seismic , hydrological and meteorological measurements and experiments. The station is of particular interest from a meteorological point of view, as climatic influences from northern regions and the monsoon region in the south of the mountains meet in the Tian Shan .

Here we have one of the global weather kitchens. And if you want to find a statement for the entire earth system, you can only do that by singling out individual regions and trying to analyze them more precisely. - Ulrich Wetzel, coordinator of the project and scientist at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam

Overall, the station is intended to facilitate the work of scientists in the poorly developed mountain region and enable them to gain geoscientific knowledge about the Central Asia region . The station is also designed for international research projects and is used by researchers from different countries.
